Frequently Asked Questions About
Renovations, Remodels, and Builds
What’s the difference between a ‘renovation’ and a ‘remodel’?
“Aren’t they pretty much the same thing?!” It’s not uncommon to think they are. But there are some major differences between a ‘renovation’ and a ‘remodel’. We’ve provided some clarity below:
Renovation = Improving an existing space. You may want to update your fixtures, finishes, paint, flooring, and make general cosmetic changes. Sometimes it involves minor structural changes but generally it’s about refreshing a space (kitchen cabinets, countertops, bathroom fixtures are other examples)
Remodel = Typically more extensive in scope meaning we are looking to change the structure, layout, and function of a space in a more drastic way. May involve moving walls, redoing electrical or plumbing elements, expansions and additions, etc.
Renovations tend to be less time-consuming whereas remodels are larger projects that are more expensive and larger in project scope.
What’s the difference between a carpenter and a general contractor?
Carpenters are craftsmen who specialize in hands-on construction, specifically when it involves wooden structures and fixtures.
General contracting is a service. Consider them expert project managers who oversee all aspects of a construction project, from start to finish. This includes working with clients (like you) to bring their complete project to the finish line. They oversee hiring subcontractors and managing the timeliness and budget of a project.
Do contractors have to be licensed in the state of Maine?
What can I expect for a timeframe for my project?
Like snowflakes, every project is unique. And because of that, it’s difficult to give a standard timeframe for specific projects. A skilled contractor can assess your unique project and based on experience and workload, provide an accurate estimate (with room for flexibility) of time to completion.
